Avast is a multifunction antivirus and security program that is well-respected in the industry.
If you need an antivirus or a general security solution for your computer, then Avast is a strong option. This is a versatile, well-regarded suite of tools that provide real-time protection as well as the option to scan files and folders on request. In addition to viruses, it can detect rootkits, spyware, and other malware. It also offers tool for updating and optimizing the performance of your PC.
This latest version of Avast includes a feature called Smart Scan, which is designed to make the program even more user-friendly. Smart Scan puts all of this different functionality under one umbrella, and on a schedule, it will check that programs are up-to-date and that your DNS is secured against hijacking, among other things, in addition to scanning your system for viruses, Trojans, and various other threats.
Avast also includes SafeZone, which is a web browser built from the ground up with security in mind, and the developer recommends using it whenever you’ll be accessing sensitive information. This browser even features a special banking mode that provides added peace of mind when accessing your checking accounts, credit cards, PayPal accounts, and so forth.
Avast installs and self-configures with ease. It also offers many configuration options that power users can tweak to their liking, but the average user won’t have to fuss with much. The UI is excellent as well, and for the most part, Avast works silently and behind the scenes.
If there’s a downside to Avast, it’s that it’s long held a reputation as a resource hog. This has been mitigated to some degree due to computers becoming so much more powerful and affordable and due to the development team refining the application. Nevertheless, it can still be resource-intensive at times, which may make it unsuitable for use on older computers or during gaming sessions.
